People won't even notice that they are now spending a majority of their time and effort not doing the hobby but researching and purchasing things related to that hobby. Their brain just views both as doing the hobby.

For any given hobby, it actively requires effort to actually keep doing that hobby instead of simply buying paraphernalia for that hobby.

It is extremely easy, and very smart people have a vested interest, in whatever hobby you have to transform into buying more shit related to that hobby.

Since there are billion-dollar ecosystems dedicated to turning whatever hobby you have into the hobby of buying stuff for that hobby, you have to actively resist this decay.
