What I got so far on Paradis as a world (there's a lot here, because I already had a number of related ideas before putting them together into this concept):
Orbits a larger red-dwarf star with an orbital period around 60-100 earth days; it's tidally-locked, as all habitable zone planets around red dwarves are likely to be. In keeping with the latest models, the temperature difference between dayside and nightside is large, but not extreme, owing to atmospheric circulation between dayside and nightside - life isn't limited to the terminator. This same atmospheric circulation creates strong wind, which is ~5-15 m/s most times and can abruptly escalate to hurricane forces. The odd character of that atmospheric circulation (hot at high altitudes, cool at low altitudes) means the pre-eminent forms of precipitation are mist and fog rather than rain and snow. Gravity approximately that of Earth's, likely a tiny bit higher Atmosphere a bit thinner than Earth's but with slightly more oxygen (it's the nitrogen that there is less of) Its parent star, being a red dwarf, emits mostly in the infrared, leading to sunlight being fairly dim (visually) but still quite warm; Paradis also receives a lot more UV and X-rays from its star than Earth does, making it unsafe to go outside on dayside without covering up and resulting in its radiation-tolerant native life (4 bp codons provide additional redundancy) Hot core and mantle, due to the tidal forces that forced it into the current rotational paradigm plus an overabundance of radioisotopes in its initial composition; no plate tectonics, since the crust is too thin, and instead has a drip & plume tectonic regime, like modern Venus or early Earth (around 2 billion years ago, before plate tectonics began), resulting in bizarre, "fractured" terrain (coronae and tesserae, like the Venusian landscape) Less water than Earth; not enough to form a global ocean. Most of the water is locked in glaciers on the nightside, which form a ring-ocean around the terminator from meltwater, with a number of endorrheic seas on the Dayside as well (including an especially large one at the substellar point called "The Pupil Sea", because the world resembles an eye from orbit with this sea as its dark pupil). Alkali is highly concentrated in this water, leading to universally high pHs; some places the water is caustic enough to melt the flesh of terran organisms. By contrast, the native life absolutely thrives off the high pHs, and gross biological productivity is enormous. High pH also increases silica solubility, such that silicate biostructural materials are common among native Paradisian life; they often look rather like they're made of cloudy glass, opal, or quartz. The high radiation tolerance of native Paradisian life has also given rise to an especially radiation tolerant clade of radioautotrophs, which actually use ionizing radiation the way photoautotrophs use light; they tend to concentrate radioisotopes they collect from soil and rock into central cyst-bodies to gather energy from their stimulated decay, which, in areas with soil rich in uranium or thorium, creates large, extremely-dangerous "radiotroph field" biomes which are absolutely blanketed with radiation and the soil is basically high-grade nuclear waste. Harvesting them makes a convenient source of fissile isotopes for human colonists, though! The water conditions (large lakes rather than oceans, high pH, very dense biomass) also contribute to the formation of high-grade lacustrine kerogen - in other words, high-quality oil and natural gas. While electrical power for human settlements is often supplied by wind turbines and nuclear reactors, there's also plenty of gas-burning going on, especially to power vehicles. Native life is mostly inedible to humans and vice versa, in large part because native life has an internal pH ~9.5, around that of baking soda, but also because of a lot of biomolecules that don't naturally occur on Earth and which we either can't digest or which cause liver/kidney damage in humans Said native life is pretty highly developed and there are enough large organisms to present an actual threat to humans; this is less "crazy alien monster" and more "alien with approximate ecological role of a bear but the size of an elephant and looking like a spider made of glass smelled something appetizing from your settlement and is now breaking down the walls of your house to get at it" Biological incompatibilities mean risk of native pathogens infecting humans is relatively low, though there are a few purely opportunistic pathogens; for example, there is a fungus-like microorganism which perceives human lungs as exactly the kind of warm and moist environment it should grow in. This isn't actually good for the fungus, but the human immune system is bad at dislodging it and the silicates it carries with it in its spores can form a coating on the inside of the lung, making it difficult and painful to breathe, causing a disease called Glasslung The high-radiation environment and weak industrial base of the human colonists makes manufacturing fancy semiconductor electronics difficult; computers are mostly back to being bulky things, since bigger transistors are more radiation-resistant and require less of an advanced industry. Fancy computers are basically lostech. On the other hand, colonists have retained advanced bioengineering capabilities (I mean, if not for GMO crops, they wouldn't be able to grow shit in Paradisian soil). This includes the capablity to create engineered organisms known as Chimeras, or "Frankensteiners", with individual organs and body systems created separately through tissue engineering and stitched together (often including many outright mechanical parts), and controlled by neural organoids (a fancy name for "synthetic brain tissue") cultured from a mixture of dog, rat, and monkey genes (with maybe a few human genes inserted), with electrodes and drugs being used to control them. These chimeras fulfill a lot of roles you'd expect from robots - including the setting's biomechanical mechs, the STRIDERS, which interface with their pilots via pairing their control electrodes with electrodes implanted in the pilot's brain. Chimeras are intelligent, sentient creatures, though may not always be treated with the respect something like that deserves. Von Neumann probes sent in an attempt to terraform the planet before human colonists arrived failed completely, but a number of Terran species have secured footholds in the Paradisian ecology (Mostly fungus. Fungus is crazy). These probes are still around and still self-replicating, still trying in vain to terraform the planet (though their instructions have degraded to the point where their actions are mostly aimless besides making more of themselves occasionally), and may present a danger to human settlements
