Realism will still always have a place in games, but in time I hope it will be used a lot more purposefully.

I think we are entering a new age of art and it is going to be *weird.* Who knows what AAA games are going to look like in the future. But we have already seen a trend of 3D animation steering away from realism and AAA games will do the same soon.

As much as I adore the accessibility of tools like MetaHuman I think it completely dilutes the impact of realism. My allegiance to art has me prefer this outcome, because accessibility to art is vital for its future, but realism is boring now. Frankly we're in exciting times!

Realism is the ultimate expression of intimacy. To paint something so impressively believable without shortcuts takes dozens, in some cases hundreds of hours, observing and surrendering to your subject matter. Realism is meaningful when you can *feel* the blood sweat and tears put into it

Also, I LOVE photorealism but yes it *cannot* compromise readability and most games handle it poorly. I think some good examples of photorealism are Death Stranding and The Last of Us 2, the latter in particular is imo one of the few games where realism empowered the game as a body of creative work.

Art fundamentals have taught me that lighting and animation is like 90% of what makes something look "good." Everything else will follow through if those two things are nailed down.

also ugh so many stupid takes on ray tracing. "Imagine if they spent dev time on physics rather than ray tracing" is a comment that appears in EVERY single video about game physics. like...... what do you think rtx is for......

honestly it's like 90% nostalgia goggles. does no one remember how basically every PS3 and 360 game ran like dogshit?!?! I remember being a child visiting a friend's house wondering why CoD on their 360 had so many "lines" and why GTA5 felt so "laggy" and they had no idea what I was talking about

I think dogs have it very hard, yes. I think their desperation for praise and attention is a consequence of an overexerted and exhausted self-esteem. I think beings evolved to survive on complex social dynamics will recognize the indignity of being a slave. I think dogs are better at it than we are.
