Weirdly I’ve had some of my most sloggish runs right before some big landmark I’ve been training for (a new distance, a race). The 5K on the horizon might have got into your head. Go again another day - this far into the programme, you know you can do it!

And related to passing through the accepted trad filter, the copyeditors/proofreaders/cover designers/printers used by reputable self-pub companies are literally the same ones used by trad publishers. (Speaking as both a freelance copyeditor and an ed director at one such company.)

Not sure if you’re actually looking for advice, but in case yes: where we are either X or Y; where either we are X or we are Y. If ‘either’ goes before a verb you need a second verb after ‘or’.

Is it recent? A lot of very questionable things haven’t always been… questioned in fiction. So much more so now but all you can do is advise the author, really. I had one recently who declined to cut a racial slur that was definitely not serving a purpose.

At a school fete in the late 80s I paid 10p to have my picture taken with the guest of honour, the Dulux Dog. The Dulux Dog! Had the photo on my wall for years after.
