It takes a few days before Jayce rejoins Viktor in the lab. He needs time to deal with the toll of his emotional breakdown, time Viktor seems more than willing to give him. When he does finally return he moves out of habit to check his condition in the lab's medical section.

Jayce is utterly unprepared for what he finds in the mirror. Of course he knew, rationally, that the Arcane corruption was an ongoing process and would spread accordingly, but the speed has him reeling. The infection has spread far beyond his arm, looping over his shoulder and face in sickly swirling patterns.

Holy —! He's vaguely aware of Viktor somewhere behind him, using the Hexclaw to weld something on his workbench, but for the moment he can only stare at his reflection in a kind of fascinated horror. There really is no going back now. "Piltover would lose its mind if it saw me like this," he murmurs, unsure if he is addressing Viktor or merely acknowledging the fact to himself. "The shimmer is just… everywhere now."

Viktor snorts behind him, still focusing intently on whatever his latest project is. "Jayce, they would be more concerned that you are alive and with me the entire time." Jayce continues to run a hand over his face and neck in a kind of horrified fascination.

"Maybe I should change my look. Grow out my hair," he muses, oblivious to the sudden silence as the Hexclaw abruptly shuts off. "Maybe a beard?" He glances over his shoulder, prepared to ask Viktor's opinion, but finds Viktor staring down at his workbench with an odd intensity. Hmm… whatever he's working on must be giving him problems. Probably better not to interrupt, he thinks as he walks away.

His resolve to leave Viktor be lasts for most of the day, but eventually Jayce is pushed to his limit. The man simply will not stop working. Jayce is aware that Viktor's body is substantially stronger than he was when they last worked together in the lab. His many augmentations have strengthened his spine, straightened his leg, even restored his ability to breathe. He has more freedom to move and more strength to remain standing. (He should also be far less reactive, thanks to the emotional inhibitor he was so quick to champion, but strangely Jayce has seen no real evidence of its influence. He's privately grateful and resolves, for once in his life, not to press his luck by inquiring.)

And yet Viktor is still a man. He still eats, he still breathes… he still sleeps. Or at least he would, if he was taking care of himself..! Jayce has never been able to ignore Viktor's complete disregard for his own well-being when he loses himself in his work, and it appears that hasn't changed. There must be something he can do…

Jayce's thoughts are interrupted by the familiar feeling of an impending Arcane eruption. For a moment he fights back a surge of annoyance (why now of all times?!?) before an idea hits. It's wild and a bit silly, but honestly, what's the worst that could happen? They've already made a lot of progress in Jayce's ability to retain his own mind while transformed, so for one Jayce doesn't fight the Arcane, but allows himself to shift smoothly into his bestial form.

Creeping into the lab reveals that Viktor is still hyper-fixated on his project, in fact he doesn't even appear to hear Jayce entering. Now if he can just…

Carefully Jayce pads closer to Viktor's workbench. Closer… closer… just a few more steps…

And before Viktor can react, Jayce makes a giant leap and plants himself right on Viktor's workstation. The face he receives is priceless.

"Jayce!" Viktor yells in dismay. "Get off the table!" He sounds so much like an aggrieved pet owner, Jayce has to fight the urge to roll off the table laughing. Instead he proudly settles himself down amid Viktor's papers with the biggest canine grin his jowls can make.

"Break time, V!"

Viktor is unprepared for the sight that greets him as he steps outside the Alley. He was initially planning to venture Topside, drawn by the rumors of destruction outside Jayce's lab, but he almost as soon as he emerged from his lair he was unexpectedly cornered by… something. It takes him a moment to even make sense of the creature's appearance, and once he does… to say he is shocked would be an understatement.

"A hound? Corrupted by Hextech..?" The sight has disturbing implications, for there could be only one mind capable of this type of augmentation. "Just how low are you willing to sink for them, Jayce?" The notion of Jayce overseeing something of this nature, especially given his objections to Viktor's own experiments… the mere thought is enough to make Viktor seethe at the hypocrisy.

While the number and extensiveness of Viktor's own augmentations might seem excessive to some, the prosthetics themselves are hardly considered unusual. Arguments with Jayce aside, many in Zaun are forced to consider some time of mechanical augmentation to maintain their quality of life. Such things have been commonplace for decades, and the basic technology is stable and well-established.

Arcane corruption, however, can be both virulent and volatile. It is nearly impossible to control its outcome with complete certainty, and there is always the risk that the arcane will suddenly turn on the organic host, tearing through living tissue like a firestorm. That this animal is still functioning and capable of movement is already a miracle, one that likely will not last indefinitely. As much as Viktor may try to deny it, he still has a heart, augmented though it might be, and scruples to go with it. He is not willing to see an innocent creature suffer for Piltover's hubris. Between one thought and the next, the Hexclaw begins powering up. "Let me put you out of your misery."

He is prepared for the animal to turn tail and run. That would be entirely natural and expected. What is not expected is for the hound to crouch forward on it's forelegs, jaws visibly clenching and straining until a shocking voice emerges. "V… Viktor, help."

No… No, it can't be… For a moment Viktor is frozen in place, before reason asserts itself. "A voice changer?" His eyes narrow at the attempted manipulation. "That's low, even for you." Yet he can't help but hesitate in the face of the misery rolling off the hound in nearly palpable waves.

Could it really be..?

My playstyle is not solely on swarming the board but more just being able to apply pressure with slightly bigger units and hold or reclaim a battlefield fast.

Went undefeated in Riftbound tonight until final round when a fellow Viktor player took out the win so I can even be sad haha.
Although my crowning achievement was winning against this Sett player I've faced every week so far. Absolutely lovely guy, but also man did it feel good getting this win 💪

It takes Viktor some time to realize that Jayce is growing quieter, speaking less and less. Viktor's natural tendency to become focused on work to the exclusion of all else aids the process; without Jayce's interruptions in the form of requests to confirm some data point, suggestions for new avenues of research, and the occasional simple reminiscence on past memories, Viktor loses himself in research for hours at a time. This makes him slow to register day to day changes, but eventually even he can't ignore the increasing silence and lack of Jayce's presence. Looking around only to realize that Jayce has slipped away from the lab is happening more frequently, no longer the exception to routine but the normal routine.

Things come to a head when he happens to look over later that afternoon and realizes that Jayce is hunched over and shaking, obviously in the throes of another forced transformation. By the look of him, it's been going on for some time, and he's probably been aware of the impending fit for hours. Insufferable man… Why would he attempt to keep this quiet..? Viktor approaches his shaking partner and is surprised when his offered hand is rebuffed, Jayce curling in on himself as if trying to hide from Viktor's view.

It's enough to shred the last of Viktor's restraint. With a snarl he grabs Jayce and forces him back against the wall, keeping him in place with a hand against his throat. "What has happened that you now refuse my help? That you won't even look at me, Defender?" He can feel Jayce trembling, hear the curse that escapes his mouth, but all he can see is the pure misery in Jayce's eyes. Why? Why is he being so stubborn? "I thought we —!"

He breaks off his words with a scoff, dropping Jayce back to the ground. These emotional outbursts are getting out of hand, he really needs to investigate this malfunction of his emotional suppressors. (He ignores voice in his mind pointing out that he never could stay calm around Jayce; the man shattered his control effortlessly.) "Forget it, I don't care anymore," he mutters, turning and throwing a hand over his face, as if afraid his mask isn't enough to hide his turmoil. "I was a fool for even thinking we could change—"

"It's because I understand now, Vik."

The anguish he hears in Jayce's voice is enough to freeze him in his tracks. Eyes widening, he forces himself to turn around and meet his partner's gaze. And what he finds…

Jayce's transformation is nearly complete, hastened by his raging emotions. Even in his bestial form, Viktor can see the tears coursing down Jayce's face. His newly formed ears are pinned backwards, pressed as close to his scalp as they can reach. Were he truly the dog he now appears, Viktor would expect him to begin howling in agony.

"The pain, the fear, the want to tear my body apart and replace it with machine…" Jayce lowers his head, shaking in his distress. "It scares me to know how much I failed you, V."

Oh Jayce… how long have you carried this?
