Given how horrendous most of the takes by The Youths are about anything which is not current, I could live without.

The better movies do exactly what you said - they do provoke an emotion, they make an argument - one that the viewer has to read between the lines to see. It ain't nerd shit, it's media literacy.

it's added up to a rubric-based viewing of movies where political alignment is required to do and say things in acceptable ways with, as you suggest, no further interrogation. People don't even Google things to fact-check before they spout off their outrage.

(3) people reviewing film for titled publications are not the best in the biz, they're largely people who are willing to work super cheap so they can write for a publication. And this is the barometer for many people when they see how movies are discussed

(2) older viewers who understood a different kind of movie reviewing and criticism are now mixing with younger people who are often clumsy at best when they try to employ ideas about what criticism is.

I feel like no one is engaging you on this, and I think I'm in alignment with you, just FYI. My belief about *why* people seem to view movies so much differently now are (1) maybe they don't, but people trained to better discuss movies largely owned the sphere until Twitter.
