I’m so-so on HAMNET. I’m extremely wary of tales abt tortured male artists, but enough of a Chloé Zhao fan to give it a go. Jessie Buckley is a knock-out, as many have said. But I didn’t find anything especially novel in the film’s treatment of love or grief. And there’s the tortured genius thing.

Screened Isabel Sandoval’s LINGUA FRANCA as the last film in my Female Filmmakers class today. Though made in 2019, it could not have been more resonant.

Has anyone written a comparison of Eva Victor’s SORRY, BABY and Luca Guadagnino’s AFTER THE HUNT? Victor’s is the stronger work by far, IMO. But Andrew Garfield is masterful as a particular kind of shit familiar to many women in academe. The scene of him eating at the Indian restaurant is 👌🏻.

Day 29 #NoirvemberChallenge
Favorite RKO Noir

Lots to choose from, but I’m going with THE DEVIL THUMBS A RIDE. A combo of DETOUR and THE HITCHHIKER, but someone even more perverse and propulsive than either of them. Knocked my socks off when I saw it a few years ago.

Looking for an alternative to that presentist, sausage-fest 100 Best Comedies list? May I recommend Cinema’s First Nasty Women, a collection of 99 silent-era films of feminist protest, slapstick and mayhem.

I love FORCE OF EVIL and the way it connects the illegal “numbers racket” to capitalism, so I’m going with that.

Day 16 #NoirvemberChallenge
Lesser-known noir everyone should see.

Not sure if this counts as lesser-known, but I’m a big fan of TOO LATE FOR TEARS. Amazing combo of female criminality and lower-middle-class precarity.

I had never seen Lon Chaney in Tod Browning’s THE UNKNOWN. 🙈 What a gift to see if for the first time on the big screen at the Orinda Theatre accompanied by two silent film music gods — Stephen Horne and Frank Bockius!
