Haven't received as many contributions as usual for this year's lists--could be many things, but one aspect is surely that our ability to get this in front of people is much diminished. If you know folks whose stuff should be on here, please suggest it! contingentmagazine.org/yearly-pub-l...

Before the midterms of 1866, President Andrew Johnson called his congressional opponents traitors and said they should be hanged.

Voters were so profoundly moved by his words... that they gave his opponents a supermajority in Congress, and the nation got the Fourteenth Amendment.

Thrilled to announce I begin a new post as lecturer of Early Am. History at University of Illinois this fall!

Could not be happier or more grateful to be working in such a well respected department and university.

Good news for people who like - news. My cat Loki, however, remains unimpressed.

My rep, Mike Bost of the 12th Congressional District of Illinois voted 'yes' on the "Big Bill."

His "email me" portal has been down - I can't imagine why 🫥.

In the interim, I'm leaving the letter I wrote him on every social I have. Typos = my own.

History. You don't know it's happening until it's happening.

THE most important lesson of studying history is often the most difficult to teach: people didn't know what was going to happen.

For much of my teaching life, that claim didn't register. But in months after 9/11, Fall 2020, now. It does.
