Here's a new version of our paper on Australia's pandemic pension withdrawals, our third major revision. This revision brings a new title, a narrative reframing, and a major overhaul of our calibration exercise. 🧵

We need to immediately abolish the eSafety Commissioner.
I... am going to suggest some vendor sold a load of bullshit to Australia's eSafety Commissioner.

The coalition's nuclear plan released on Friday achieves its claimed cost savings not primarily by nuclear being cheaper than firmed renewables but by replacing firmed renewables with existing coal power. That results in an additional 1 billion tonnes of emissions (worth ~$180b).

My piece in today's Australian Financial Review on the public sector's crowding out of the private sector. In the past two calendar years 87% of employment growth occurred in the non-market sector despite its accounting for just 30% of jobs. In September it was 91%!

Credentialism is bad. One should always engage with the substance of an argument rather than questioning the qualifications of the person making it. The one permissible exception is to remind everyone that Greg Jericho has a PhD in English literature.

Greg is referring here to the RBA Governor Michele Bullock as an economic simpleton.

I might be a junior economist but even junior economists know about the fundamental problem of causal inference. Unfortunately that basic concept escapes The Australia Institute’s Chief Economist. Regardless, it would be a strange theory that suggests government spending has no effect on inflation.

What’s a place in DC with an excellent and eclectic beer selection?

I asked the guy at Whole Foods to pick the 10 plumpest scallops he could find as it’s my wife’s and my anniversary of getting together and scallops are her favorite. He asked how long we’d been together. When I told him the year, he replied that’s when he was born. 💀

i like the vibe here. it's like when you strategically plan to arrive at a house party 30 minutes late and yet you're still the first person there so you drink a beer while walking around in circles and pretending to look at the stuff on their bookcase

@andrewbaker.bsky.social you will be happy to know I don’t tweet about Australian stuff here because I am fairly sure I am not yet followed by any Australians

I have never eaten cottage cheese. Honestly I don’t really know what it is. Cheese made in a cottage?
cottage cheese is one of the best all-around food items
I would like to hear some controversial culinary opinions.

My (relatively mild) one is that anchovies are good 🐟

Also no pineapple on pizza takes please, because that debate always takes over everything 🙅🏽‍♀️

Computer modern is terrible and you all should stop using it.
I heavily dislike both times new Roman and computer modern fonts. They should go away.
