It worked when the terms of the debate were ‘our public services and infrastructure can’t handle these numbers’. Which was what all the anti immigration folk used to say. I agree they are increasingly dropping the pretence this is what they care about.

I suppose the argument for it is the Nick Clegg/nuclear fallacy, ie yes it takes ages but that’s a reason for starting it, not delaying it
