Access is central to our mission — without it, preservation and restoration are meaningless. At SFFP, ensuring films reach audiences is always top of mind. Here’s how we make it happen:

BEHIND THE DOOR (1919) and BELOW THE SURFACE (1920), two Irvin Willat films beautifully restored by @sffilmpreserve.bsky.social . BTD is an *intense* revenge tale with Wallace Beery perfectly case as one of the most vile villains you'll ever find anywhere.

• Storage at Library of Congress: We store our negatives in the Library of Congress’s climate-controlled film vaults, providing a safe, stable environment for these films
• Digital Preservation: We preserve all data related to each restoration project, along with project master files, on LTO tapes
November 25, 2025 at 6:57 AM
Below are the primary steps we take when preserving our restorations:

• 35mm Negatives: We create new 35mm negatives on modern polyester film stock, allowing for a massively extended life for our restored titles
November 25, 2025 at 6:57 AM
We preserve digital copies of our restorations, along with all project information, on archival-standard LTO tapes. This ensures that all aspects of a restoration project can be correctly interpreted at any point in the future.
November 25, 2025 at 6:57 AM
35mm is still the most reliable form of film preservation and is the gold standard in archival settings. Our negatives and film prints are housed in the SFFP collection at the Library of Congress.
