It's definitely a skill issue on my end, though considering the moves you have to alternate between (a back -> forward charge motion followed by a down slide) it's probably easier on a stick compared to the pad I'm using

100%. Subspace particularly had some issues, but damn if it isn't one of the coolest things a crossover fighter has ever done.

Funny thing is, I think most Alex Kidd fans would probably agree that the one game in the series worth playing is the one where he inexplicably becomes a ninja (and was also only ever released in NA and EU)
