Northwestern and Columbia being famous for journalism and bending over for Trump seems a little too on the nose these days
This is the second largest payout from a private university to the Trump admin yet, second only to Columbia’s $200m

why are universities even considering folding to an administration that's 20 points underwater
BREAKING: Northwestern University has agreed to pay the U.S. Treasury $75 million, over the course of three years as part of an agreement with the federal government to restore funding and end investigations into the university

Every Black Friday I take the time to read what is perhaps my favorite piece in the history of online media— @jonbois.bsky.social on RadioShack’s slow, painful death.

A eulogy for RadioShack, the panicked and half-dead retail empire
This may very well be RadioShack’s final holiday season. Jon, a former employee, looks back on a strange, craven, five thousand-fingered strip-mall monster from a forgotten age.

Elon Musk and the Trump administration gleefully shutting down USAID “has already caused the deaths of six hundred thousand people, two-thirds of them children.”

People throw around terms like genocide quite freely online but it’s hard to find other words to describe this level of man-made death.

if Zillow Ed is saying you've not only done crimes but that an OLC opinion won't immunize you, you may want to start making travel plans to a non-extradition country that also ignores the ICC
Does Pete Hegseth have a "golden shield" against prosecution in the form of a DOJ OLC opinion? Ed Whelan thinks not.

To be explicit, we executed a German U-Boat commander who said he had to sink lifesaving gear / “inadvertently” kill survivors because it might give away his position, thereby potentially resulting in the loss of his submarine.

We executed multiple members of that crew.
Heinz-Wilhelm Eck might have something to say about this one.

I don’t know how much these guys are trying to bamboozle people vs how much they’ve bamboozled themselves, but what they really mean is “M4A is unpopular with our donors and possible future employers.” That’s all they’re talking about. Do they even know the different this point? Who cares! Fuck ‘em.
Man remember when that "Deciding To Win" manifesto came out a month or two back that people like the Pod Save America hosts and David Axelrod and James Carville signed off on that said M4A was an unpopular nonstarter that should be jettisoned?

none of those people should work again
🚨NEW: A new poll Americans’ support for Medicare For All has intensified to the point where the old attacks may no longer work.

As both parties legislate criticism of socialism, there has been a 50-point shift on a key question in just 6 years.

This is YUGE.

The reason we got and cannot get rid of Trump is that America is a business and he is a cash cow for way way way too many people including his ostensible opponents. He’s the Beatles of news, and that is an indicator that the news itself is broken.

The basic policymaker mental model for climate action assumes:

- maintaining status quo is a win
- we have plenty of time
- electricity is the only source of pollution

All 3 are false, to the benefit of the wealthiest enterprise in human history, at the expense of all life on earth (including us)
Mark Carney has had to 'step forward and backwards and it all sort of cancels out' headspace on climate for quite some time.

It's the logic of carbon offsetting: if you operate a coal plant, but you also build some renewable energy, the latter cancels out the former 🫠

i said sure bc we'd have wanted to see it again anyway and it'd be a fun choice

before we go out to see it he casually mentions they haven't seen act 1
