I suspect you have to be quite racist to stand out as "the racist guy" at a boys public school of the 1980s.

I see the Irish political class is fawning over Zelenskyy all the while spending less than any other developed country on defence, contributing nothing to Europe’s collective security, all the while pretending they’re neutral (which the patently aren’t).

re the jury proposals in england it looks like they are going for the approach which exists in scotland where the accused in no circumstances has a choice of procedure. Somehow this has operated without civilisation falling apart with specified maximum sentences for sheriffssitting in summary cases

More good news for the Chancellor ahead of the budget next month!

Here we have an actual and workable wealth tax...which is raising more tax than expected.
Well would you look at that

1/ There’s quite a lot of misunderstanding by good journalists about how right to work checks operate. It’s not illegal to work without having provided proof of your right, as James goes on to say later in the thread. And employers are not under a legal duty to conduct checks: ID is not mandatory.
Not sure day one of the latest ID card rollout went very well at all, not least because the government couldn’t answer the absolute core question about why they’re being introduced.

The case is that digital ID will be required for anyone to get work. The problem is ID is already mandatory. 🧵

I think a key factor of this is that we learned how to do research with books first and then got the internet afterwards. The internet was positioned to enhance your understanding of the world, not BE your understanding of it.
Discovering computer as an adult makes you go crazy. Discovering computer as a baby makes you go crazy. In all of human history, there will only ever be one generation to discover computer at the correct age: 13
The problem with every post-Millennial generation is they got to go straight to high speed internet. Of course you'll get computer madness that way. Make them start with those old screeching modems and work their way up

When someone goes out of their way to point their face in a TV camera it is reasonable to infer that they have granted permission for their image to be used on TV.
I worry that the decades it took to build anti-racism norms are unravelling quite quickly. Clearly the protests/social media drumbeat has created a permission structure that makes people think they can behave like this. Hard to see how it can be easily re-bottled.
Sickening footage from Nuneaton tonight, where a Sky News interview with a local businessman was disrupted by racists hurling abuse.

Another local said, "Warwickshire Council Council has gone to Reform... It's given certain people a licence to be aggressive and racist."

I prosecute and defend the most serious sexual offences in our courts.

The overwhelming majority of offenders are British-born. Overwhelmingly the victim is someone known to them, either a partner or relative.

Dear universities,

I am begging you to stop requiring letters of recommendation for master's programmes. You and I both know you don't read them, so stop asking for them.

Instead, have applicants list a name and get in touch if it's a borderline case.

Signed,
Everyone.

Increasingly convinced the cheapest way to address this is to reverse local government austerity. Returning English local authority budgets to 2010 levels would cost about £7bn. Factor in population and demographic change and you'd want maybe £15bn. Benefits could be seen quickly and felt widely.
