Portrait of a vicious killer and a very yummy meal

(Yes, I'm still struggling with the face that Lionfish are native to SE Asia).

Going all the way back to Gili T - I was amazed at how many Peacock Mantis Shrimp there are there! I know I say this about most critters, but these have to be one of my faves!

Stubby season is here in the Pacific Northwest and this chonker is showing some big feelings about being photographed by turning white and burying itself in the sand!

This color change is super hard to photograph, let alone light, but I'm pretty happy with how these turned out.

Nature is so incredible! This Blue Spotted Stingray seems to have been born without an eye! The hole you see is it's gill slits and where the eye would have been, but there doesn't seem to be any injury.

What do you think - Natural anomaly or injury?

One of my favorite ocean weirdos, Phyllodesmium briareum. I prefer to call it the Spaghetti Nudi, but what do I know. It happens to look like the coral it feeds on, proving once again that macro critter spotting isn't about finding the critters, but moreso their food source!

Here's another master of camoflauge - The Crinoid Squat Lobster. Like the Whip Coral Shrimp, they also match their crinoid in coloring & have a symbiotic relationship with them. The crinoid helps protect them from predators!

This was the first trip that I've gotten the macro shots of Whip Coral Shrimp that reaply do them justice.

Whip Coral Shrimp live...well...on whip coral and their coloration varies to blend in with the greens, whites, and browns of the coral!

"Nudibranch for scale"

Imagine this, a single tiny coral head in the middle of a sandy bottom. 1 large nudibranch (Hypselodoris tryoni) catches my eye, then 2! I swing around to the backside and I see two tiny nudis (Mexichromis trilineata)!

'You've got something on your butt'

I always love finding things in photos that I didn't notice while taking them and this brought me so much joy. While these Painted Phyllidia sea slugs are relatively large, the larval shell catching a ride on this one is miniscule!

Waiting in the airport after an incredible dive trip around the Banda Sea. Pristine reefs, epic sunsets, and wonderful macro on an incredible vessel with even more incredible crew!

I'm leaving with more places to check out next time, as always! Til next time Indonesia!

I've only seen these little guys a couple of times, but have never gotten a good photo of them. Apparently this is the juvenile phase of the Spotted Parrotfish (Cetoscarus ocellatus)! I love fish that have distinct phases and this was a complete surprise!

So many tiny octos welcomed us to Gili T waters! They're even smaller than the Rubys! This guy wasn't super excited for paparazzi so I only took a shot or two before moving on.

Giant Acorn Barnacles were everywhere in God's Pocket, using their cirri (the pink fan thing) to filter feed. They are the world's largest barnacle, reaching a diameter of 15cm/6 in & a height of up to 30cm / 12 in

The most surprising thing from this trip to God's Pocket, BC was the transformation of the reef, walls, and rocks when one shines a light on it. Viz hasn't been great this week, so everything has been a bit green, but the moment it's lit up, it turns into cotton candy!

Which do you like better? Black and white or color?

The juvenile jellies are out in full force in BC right now. I spotted at least 6 different species in the water column at Tyee Cove!

We stopped by Porteau Cove for a quick look and were amazed at a sea floor covered in cold-water crinoids! Five species of crinoids are known to occur in British Columbia, along with tons of Nudis, Lingcod, and the largest starfish I've ever seen!

There are many urchins in SE Asia, but the Blue Spotted Sea Urchin (Astropyga radiata) may be the prettiest.

Its beauty is also reflected when looking at the meaning of its scientific name: "Radient Star Anus" 🤣🤣🤣

Skeleton shrimp, among many other tiny creatures, are why good buoyancy is a must, so an errant fin or knee doesn't wipe out an entire generation!

This may be my favorite photo of this trip. Something about the highlight on this shy one's eye is so interesting to me! It was hiding in a rusted can, and I could barely wedge my camera in to get it!

Deco drills in the blue.

This was my first real focused forray into shooting humans underwater. My light was acting up, so this is all natural light, but I'm digging the moodiness of these.

Juvy Harlequin Sweetlips are so hard to photograph. Not only was this one about the size of a quarter (see anemone for scale), they flutter around, mimicking the movements of poisonous flatworms to avoid predation.
