I tend to believe the ghost is deliberately not showing Scrooge how Fred is reacting. It would give Scrooge what he wants. Instead, we hear about Fred being nice to the Cratchits, which twists the knife.
The other option is that Fred has given up on Scrooge. A few versions suggest this.
