Anti-vax sovereign citizen loons are still at it. I got 3 claims today, with my bills being $12M and $10.3M for not having stopped vaccination of people in Canada.

They're adding $60k/d plus an 'escalator clause per the 3rd book of Mofes, called Leuiticus"

I should stop checking my mailbox at work

Today, I got three registered mail

One is another notice from someone who’s fining me for failing to stop all vaccination of ppl in Canada. (If I had that much power, I’d have been able to score @BlueJays tickets for tonight).

Despite the constant online whining about #s, the owners have not provided any flock records or inventory info, and the farm's estimated numbers vary

A legitimate farm would have good records. One that claims to be doing research should have excellent records. Not this farm

CFIA update about Universal Ostrich farm.

CFIA is respecting court orders and waiting, while caring for the birds.

Winter preparations are "based on the owners' description of past practices, but are limited by the poor condition of the few facilities on the farm".

Following up on @PHAC_GC 's rather vague Sept notice about an outbreak of salmonellosis in ppl linked to pet food or treats, there's now a link with Puppy World and Puppy Love treats.

31 diagnosed (so likely hundreds of actual) infections

Two children with neuro and ocular dz from the raccoon roundworm, Baylisascaris procyonis.

One full recovery.
One with severe longterm consequences (and a missed diagnosis).

There's a mix of excessive concern about this parasite by some and lack of awareness by others

Ultrasonic flea/tick repellants for pets.

Easy to find, splashy advertizing, but do they work?

TLDR: There's no supporting evidence and often the 'evidence' that's used in marketing is crap.

Not an official "Dear Veterinarian" letter but my own plea to avoid causing harm through inappropriate nitrofurantoin use in dogs and cats.

It's a good drug for UTIs but only gets useful drug levels in the bladder (so it's useless for other infections).

New ISCAID guidelines for superficial bacterial folliculitis (pyoderma) in dogs.

Full guideline link in the post below.

Some highlights:

Topical treatment (e.g. 2-4% chlohex) should be first line.

Heartworm is spread by mosquitoes, and heartworm larvae have to develop in the mosquito before they can infect a dog.

That takes time and temp, and we can estimate the start of the risk period based the time the mean temp is above 14C.

Heartworm in dogs...in Canada we've typically said June 1 for the start of seasonal heartworm meds.

Does that still apply with a changing climate?

Data from Ontario suggest we're fine and still have lots of cushion.

H5N1 influenza in a sheep in the UK (positive milk sample).

Nice surveillance pickup, through testing of livestock on a farm with infected birds.

Just 1 positive (so far, at least) so hopefully just a random one-off spillover.

However...

While H5N1 in poultry is getting all the press, Salmonella remains a big issue.

Interesting @foodsafetynews report about industry pushback on Salmonella thresholds. (Unlike E coli in beef, there are no limits for Salm in poultry).

More H5N1 infections in cats have been linked to raw diets.

Communication around testing (and deflection by some companies) has led to confusion, especially around 'non-negative' results.

Thoughts on that in the blog post linked in the replies.

H5N1 and pet food safety.

Full comments in the blog post in the replies but, TLDR...

Canned food: basically sterile

Kibble: cooked at temps well above what kills flu

'Lightly/gently cooked': Probably ok but I'd want to know actual cooking temp and time.

No, canned pet food is not higher risk. It's cooked at high temps and is basically sterile.

Avoiding raw poultry based diets is an important H5N1 protection step but avoiding canned food does not make sense.

Over a year ago, CLSI, the group that guides interpretation of culture and susceptibility testing, made some big changes to canine guidelines.

Many labs still have not implemented them, resulting in treatment failures. So here's a quick reference (more details and a pdf version in the blog post)
