Fancy stats can help tell a nuanced story but sometimes the big, easy metrics do just fine. If you sort the table by worst goals against it's not that hard to figure out why these teams are struggling.

Lost Army of Cambyses The Lost Army of Cambyses was, according to an ancient Near Eastern legend, a massive fighting force of 50,000 Persian soldiers that disappeared in the Western Desert of Egypt in 525 BC. They had supposedly been sent by Cambyses II to subjugate the Oracle of Amun at the Siwa Oasis, but were never seen or heard from again after becoming engulfed in a sandstorm. Around this time, Cambyses, who had succeeded Cyrus the Great as the King of Kings of the Achaemenid Empire, was leading the first Persian conquest of Egypt.

I was wrong about that, they gave Bedard that matchup most of the night, and his line did well.
Blashill matched up Connor Bedard’s line, which also included Bertuzzi and Greene, up against Nathan MacKinnon’s line a lot on the night. In 10:43 of Bedard and MacKinnon sharing the ice at five-on-five, the Blackhawks had a 15-13 edge in shot attempts, 7-4 in shots on goal, 7-6 in scoring chances and 2-0 in high-danger chances. “MacKinnon’s line is a great line, one of the best lines in the league, especially with Nate being out there and a lot of times when he’s out there, Makar is out there,” Blashill said. “They play together, I don’t want to say exclusively, but a lot. So there’s a double-edged sword, and I thought they did a good job. I thought there were times when I’d put Dickey (Dickinson) out there against them, but I didn’t want to give Dickinson a full night just coming back from injury. I wanted Connor to check him and be able to check for his offense, and I thought that line did a good job.”

3b. How did you come about shortening the length? It’s a guy I work with, John Healy, his name is. Huge proponents of your first touch, so like, how’s your posture? Like my stick was so long that to get pucks in certain areas, I had to get out of my posture to get a first touch clean. So now as I’ve gotten shorter and shorter, I’m catching these D-to-D passes and my elbow is almost in front of me. So it’s boom, like that first touch, I’m not catching pucks up here and I’m locked up and I have to move around. My eyes can get up a little faster. Even around rims, I can stay in it. I am not jammed up here in battles. All kinds of little things you don’t really think of that give you that extra … it might be half a second, not even. But you do some studies on elite defensemen and their time from them catching a D-to-D pass or a pass low to high, how fast their eyes get up to see the net or see the play. It doesn’t seem like a lot. Elite defensemen are around .3 seconds, .4 seconds, and then you look at maybe like some bottom-pair guys and just different guys, and it’s maybe .6. So when you look at that, the elite guys are seeing the game at half as much time, or like they have double as much as time to make a play as the other guys who aren’t seeing. There’s a lot of how clean and how fast we can get our eyes up, how comfortable are we, so just kind of dialing that in a little bit.
