I think it is phrased this way because they were not married, or at least it hasn't been established yet that they were married. The closest they seem to have is this, and I get the sense that these winnings led to the end of the relationship somehow...

A lot of people don't realize this is exactly what Philip Morris and the Sacklers failed to do, and why we think so poorly of cigarette and opioid companies today.
