Fire Emblem'd be a great starting point. Newer games have turn resets and non-permadeath modes and ways to get xp aside from the main story to help you catch up new units, and loads of ways to make the game easier for newbies.

Boss into regular enemy is a variation that can work, but I've played plenty of games where the impact is cheapened because it's literally the SAME enemy. No difference.

This also obviously adds narrative stakes as well, whatever the theme is. Also shows character growth, is satisfying from a gameplay pespective, etc etc. Lots of games do it, but EVERY game should
