New from me on productivity, AI, and the problems in how we measure it: “AI’s core function is completing goals as if they were a yes/no checkmark: having a text, rather than writing the text; having a numbered list of ideas rather than finding a good idea.” www.techpolicy.press/generative-a...

Important read on "research automation" just as the GPT5 marketing about having "PhDs in your pocket" kicks in

"AI evangelists, and others keen on rationalizing academia, reframe the traditional process of research as a problem in need of a solution"
What's the value of academic articles and doing research? The product or the process?

This article has been a long process, and how I've processed the ongoing AI disruption of research. I use it very little, and while it's clearly not all bad, I argue for caution.

Was looking into what Cognitive Scientists mean by ‘domain-general’ cognition, and then hit upon this. This is definitely NOT how we use that term.

Tip: read the last sentence to understand what went wrong here.

Sigh.

The new policy came weeks after an executive from its parent company, LexisNexis, accused the newsroom of liberal bias in its Trump admin coverage. My latest for @niemanlab.org
