YIMBY Birder (Sarah)
@sarahchadd.bsky.social
TL; DR: Birds, cats, plants, politics. Seattleite sick of Seattle process. I flit between topics like a hummingbird, but hyper-focus like a corvid. Photography, gardening, podcasts. Mom of a tween, eng partner, keeper of two cats, a dog, fish. Obv ADHD.
I clearly remember the initial Nicktoons launch. I was going into second grade and had a young baby brother. I was already a big Clarissa, Hey Dude, and all the Nick game show fan. So excited for these episodes!

And also cold?

How'd you know he asked to go thrifting last weekend for one? 🤣 And yep, we struck out.

OMG I truly didn't realize this is a "thing" (at least, insofar as we trust NYT trend pieces), but my 13-year-old started talking about wanting a quarter-zip about a month ago. Thank you, lol.

Yeah, he's awesome! I'm a little farther north but my neighbors across the street and I also have the SDOT signs out. People use our street as a cut-through to avoid ferry traffic. SDOT did install speed cushions farther south, but they don't do much. Better pic of the safety library:

I have an SDOT employee neighbor who maintains DIY traffic calming on his block. He also stocks a little free library for pedestrian safety gear (reflective vests, flashing beacons, etc.). And has a yard full of plastic flamingos he dresses for the seasons. Those are just for fun 😆

I went out today, around 3:00 when it wasn't dark and not raining *too* much, just to throw down some cardboard and cedar chips. I went through two pairs of gardening gloves in an hour because they kept getting soaked by light drizzle. I love living with it aesthetically, but in reality it's a lot.

I googled the poster and found a much more active post on that other platform. Weirdly, most comments there were in support of the "research," but this one was so perfect:

TL; DR while the trend in YIMBY/abundance circles is to remove red tape like design review, these authors think that actually, if we just do *more* design review, the aesthetic experts (who are definitely NOT NIMBYs) will totally be on board with development. Just make prettier buildings 💖
November 26, 2025 at 7:29 PM
So... People who already have homes were good with the development*because it's not in their backyard*? And a bunch of people happily gobbled up the supply *because they needed housing*? SHOCKING.

That's NIMBYism. The people who already *have* housing are trying to dictate terms of new building.

And I think that's ugly and looks like a Holiday Inn.

See the issue?
November 26, 2025 at 7:05 PM
RIP, express bus routes. They did exactly this, sometimes with a slightly more direct overall route (e.g. the 21X to West Seattle would go straight from downtown over the bridge to West Seattle rather than going through SoDo like the regular 21).
November 26, 2025 at 6:52 PM
So because some people dislike things that aren't to their taste regardless of how close they are to their own home, they aren't NIMBYs? And somehow that subjective judgment is more valid and should be taken into consideration? This is literally how we got design review boards and HOAs.

You can say it. She's a creep. 🫠
November 26, 2025 at 5:43 PM
"It's not that I don't want more housing, it's just that I'm aesthetically offended by the elevation drawing from the northwest exposure. It's not NIMBYism, it's actually altruism."
November 26, 2025 at 5:15 PM
What about Tree Action Seattle? What are they doing that's good for parks and public spaces?
November 26, 2025 at 5:07 PM
Construction is disruptive!? FASCINATING.
November 26, 2025 at 5:04 PM
But that's still a subjective judgment. Some people love brutalism, others think it's awful. Some think faux-Mediterranean is tacky, others think it's the height of suburban sophistication. And it's still NIMBYism.

And available near me 👀
November 26, 2025 at 1:52 AM
I had to read it a few times because surely I was skipping a line... But nope.
November 26, 2025 at 1:08 AM
And no, your standards are not documented. You know it when you see it.
November 26, 2025 at 12:19 AM
Right? Sometimes I see a house or commercial building and think, "Huh, that's ugly," and then I move on and give it no further thought because taste is subjective.
November 25, 2025 at 11:15 PM
Thanks, that's what I came here to say. Doesn't matter what the purported excuse is, the opposition of development for reasons like aesthetics is NIMBYism in its purest form.
