Okay, so it seems the Steam version (and I assume the EA version... didn't bother installing it) don't know how to create the settings file, so even with the fixes they still crash.
As soon as I got the cracked copy to run, the Steam version can now run.
Wow... just wow.

Oh look, the fixes that don't work on my legitimate copies ( #Steam and #EA ) work perfectly on cracked copies.

Further proof that #piracy is a service problem.
