two "hacks" I had to do for this to work the way I wanted was
1 - use a rotation lock app to force portrait mode because winlator forces landscape mode for some reason with no portrait setting
2 - put another random app underneath in split screen so the keyboard doesn't cover the pico-8 screen

I dug out my old android phone (pixel 3a) and managed to get full proper pico-8 running on it through winlator. it runs surprisingly well and I can still sync all my pico-8 files to/from it (via syncthing)!

Anyway basically after getting a bunch of help from a cool person on mastodon, I decided to try using a hex editor to find and fix a corrupted byte in the data for the monitor, with the help of a little tool I wrote in pico-8 to tell me what values to use. I thought it was a long shot, but IT WORKED
