Light traffic and considerate drivers make for great cycling in rural areas here. Only issue is some drivers literally freak out when they see a cyclist, more specific training needed as part of driving courses @nsgov.bsky.social

Crosswalk hit and run, request for witnesses.

There are recommendations but the key action plan relates to off highway crashes only. Missed the whole main place where most crashes occur

Because most people do not regularly walk or bike along main roads, they never see the extent of it. When you move slower we see things like Porcupines treading through our trash, marshland dotted with takeaway cups

I know this wasn't your question but I was curious to get an AI view on bike licencing and safety

Very low levels of safety reported by vulnerable road users, particularly women

The results of the road safety survey are include. All users report feeling less safe on roads than they did five years ago

They point to a link between investments and this reduction, however there is no evidence that the investments they outline are responsible for any serious injury and fatal incident reductions, for example crashes at basic crosswalks have more than doubled

Our 2025 road safety annual report makes depressing reading.
The municipality have failed to meet their incredibly unambitious injury & fatal crash reduction target, with HRP identifying a 16% (+799) crash increase in their area.
Pedestrian & cyclist incidents increasing year-on-year

From my councillors newsletter. Information on the results of the 2022 pilot program for "high visibility crosswalks" is not referenced or is anywhere in the public domain, to my knowledge

back in 2016, the police clarified where legal crosswalks exist using a simple visual. Not been done since, consequently every driver, staff and sometimes police deny this. Thanks @neluuna.bsky.social for making this magic happen

At least twelve road fatalities so far this year in HRM, five pedestrian. One last week.
The media consistently get this wrong, perhaps due to misinformation from HRM press releases - we have no goal to achieve zero road deaths by 2038, or any absolute fatal and serious injury crash reductions.

Staff response to my request for upgraded crossing infrastructure at this crosswalk on Dunbrack at Clayton Park Drive is the current overhead flashing beacons are a "more robust crossing treatment" to the rapid flashing beacons, shown to the left.
What is your experience?

Putting back the exact same mistake when we resurface. Why do we do this
