NEW: The membership of the new Select Committee to consider the #AssistedDying Bill will be confirmed on Tuesday in the House of Lords. It will be chaired by Lord Hope of Craighead, former Convenor of the Crossbench Peers and former Deputy President of the Supreme Court.

4/ Just 10 days ago the tech minister said Govt was only looking at whether a new digital ID could tackle illegal immigration, transform services & help everyday life.

“No firm decision, estimate or assessment has yet been made.”

🧵NEWS re the assisted dying bill. @politico.eu's London Playbook newsletter reported earlier that a deal was being negotiated between Lord Falconer (the BIll's sponsor in the Lords) & Baroness Berger who had tabled 2 motions to commit the Bill to a select committee if it gets a 2nd Reading on Friday

6/ Could this have been avoided? Yes! If the Cabinet Office had been using our @HansardSociety Statutory Instrument Tracker, it would have been immediately clear that the House of Commons had not yet approved it!

The House of Commons Order Paper says it is expected to be a Money Bill. Ultimately it's the Speaker's judgement and he won't make a decision until the end of proceedings in the Commons so amendments are taken account of. But it's an indicator.

''Assisted dying' bill likely to have 2nd Reading on 29 November. The Government has published the dates for the 13 sitting Fridays for Private Members's Bills in the future business list at the end of the Order Paper.
