I get this completely. The last time I threw out some pants, I laid them in a box and made a little funerary shrine for them with a polaroid photo and a lit candle.
if you have the same mental illness as i do where you feel sad and cruel for throwing things away even though they are unsalvageable, start telling them "thank you for your service" before retiring them. say it out loud like a crazy person and bow if you have to. it works for me every time

I hate... running out of clean underwear and being forced to wear sexy underwear under my regular clothes.
