Dit jaar zijn we weer met Saxion University of Applied Sciences in Hessen voor de jaarlijkse internationale Summer Academy met een groep studenten en docenten van de opleiding Archeologie.

Saw this beautiful foamy beech today in the forest. This is caused by stemflow, water runoff along the stem of the #tree, and the chemicals on the bark the water collects, creating a soapy foam.

Transport of bulk materials such as #wood in the #Roman period was most likely done in these large barges, transporting timber over short and sometimes long distances (> 100 km). How do we now this? Answer:

Spatial research is great with #opensource software such as @qgis.fosstodon.org.ap.brid.gy, but to make it #reproducible #rstats can be very helpful, for example in relation to transport of wood in the Roman period: www.researchgate.net/publication/..., code: doi.org/10.5281/zeno...

In 2014 & 2015 we excavated a WW2-bomber in Hesse with an international group of students. #archaeology is nice, but it was great to do it in peace and how stories from eyewitnesses and relatives of the crew came together! An amazing experience, especially the commemoration
