i used to use this strong-hold Ouidad gel, because it really gives the curls a solid shape, but I recently switched to this Davines serum and I like it a lot better. still gives a defined shape but its much lighter, plus it smells nice

the tip that helped me most is that if it looks frizzy when it’s wet, it’ll be frizzy when it’s dry. i use not your momma’s leave-in conditioner and davine’s curl building serum, then i denman brush. if there are any areas where hairs aren’t clumping together, i spray more water and brush again

i recently got to spend a good chunk of time reading anim history & theory (pic is the contents from my over-organized notes) and Frank's book was really the standout. thoughtful and passionate, but i was floored esp by her dedication to imagining alternative social configurations for artistic labor

interesting!

Frank's book made a big splash in academic comics/animation spaces but seems not to have broken through into popular media analysis (eg video essays). i imagine this is because its actually pretty densely theoretical, but its interventions are striking and would likely be appreciated by artists too

inking (tracing the penciled animation onto cels with ink) and painting (filling in the colors after the inking is complete) were considered to be forms of "uncreative" labor, and were thus less prestigious, less paid, and generally unattractive to male creatives who could get better jobs

btw the source of this info is Hannah Frank's excellent Frame by Frame (2019)

admittedly, i like the way it looks too. but the stylistic “human touch” is running cover here for the fact that the aesthetic was born from a labor crackdown that actually eliminated a large portion of the human beings working on the film
