So much of my service work these days involves thinking about numbers and making numbers-based arguments, but at the end of the day it MUST be about creating spaces and opportunities for students' intellectual growth or what is it all for?

Coming out a week before I taught my first class at Fayetteville State, this line in particular has been my cri de coeur.

Guilford Early College (reining #2 team in the state) opted not to do the virtual league, so Chapel Hill A romped the "Major" (tier 1) Division, a gobsmacking 529 points per game.

(NC Science and Math A was next in that division in ppg with 294—must have been like swimming against Katie Ledecky.)

The teams did well: the "A" team won NCASA's AA (tier 3) Division; the "B" (junior varsity) team got 4th in the A1 (tier 4) Division. But it's really nice to see each player grow.

This is a very early morning way to say:

I think more academic administrators should teach classes, at least a little bit.

I used to get really bogged down in the details of academic articles, but something about being far from town, taking care of a small human, and watching the farmer teach Sarah how to drive mules (among other things) helped me cut to the essentials of the article's contribution—what really matters?
