It was challenging, but I really wanted to try to get their sense of fear and loss when they're abandoned, and the way they tolerate things when they know they have no choice, but then their sheer joy when they're happy, and how they live in the moment.

At the same time, everything I wrote about those dogs is absolutely true and Annie is based on a dog who did find bones in an archaeological site that was thousands of years old, deep underground, and absolutely no one knows how she did it.
