An early example of Lisa Kleypas' writing, prior to the publication of her first novel in 1987. Her review of the novelization of the movie "Jewel of the Nile" appeared in Romantic Times #26 (January/February 1986).

Looking at my copy of LOVE'S TENDER FURY by Jennifer Wilde (Tom E. Huff, 1938-1990) it's astonishing to see inside on the copyright page that my 4th Printing edition came out the same month as the 1st Printing! Wikipedia says the book "had 41 printings in its first five years."

Noticed today that a local library had some "mystery bags" of paperback books for sale, so I gave them a $5 bill and took home three bags. It was mostly a bust, but one of the bags did have a first printing of Janet Dailey's first Harlequin release, "No Quarter Asked."

In ROMANTIC TIMES #48 (Feb./March 1988) Kathryn Falk in her editorial mentions various romance novelists who are making the genre exciting. I've heard of all of the authors that she names, except one. Who the heck was Micki Perry?

Posting a screencap of a FB post I wrote today (to get around the word-count limits here).

One of the free books at the library sale yesterday: Mary Jo Putney's first novel, from 1987.

Ouch! Why do people do this?

Went to the used-book sale at a local library yesterday where they had these shelves filled with paperback books for free. I ended up taking home around 80 of them, almost all romance novels. The books were free for the taking, but I gave them a $5 bill donation anyway.

Updated my blog post about old category romance lines to add this entry for one that I had previously overlooked: HEARTH ROMANCE, from Christian publisher Zondervan.

I added some more scans of interior pages to my Romantic Times magazine index over the past two weeks. Shown here are some "before & after" screencaps of RT #125, 126, 128 & 129, showing how they looked on my site two days ago compared to how they look on my site now.

This 1939 issue of LOVE STORY MAGAZINE, as noted on the cover, included a story by Australian writer Maysie Greig (1901-1971) whose novels would later appear in paperback.

Excerpt from a letter in ROMANTIC TIMES #125 (Aug. 1994) where a reader reminisced about discovering romance fiction as a girl in the 1940s. Before the paperback book boom of the 1950s, pulp magazines like LOVE STORY MAGAZINE, were a popular, inexpensive way to buy romance novels.

Got these in the mail today: 12 novels by DOROTHY DANIELS (1915-2001) published between 1966 and 1980.

Since 2019 I've been compiling an index with cover images of Dell's CANDLELIGHT ROMANCE line (1967-1982). I'm still far from done. But today I found online an image of the cover of one of the books I was missing, and it appears to be a COOKBOOK instead of a novel! Surprises never cease...

I thought that I'd do a blog post indexing an early 1980s romance novel line, a cut & paste job of an index that I made a few years ago on Facebook. But it turns out to be a bigger job than I thought, so may take a week or so. Here's a sneak peek: a book that doesn't exist (with this title anyway).

In 2019, someone on Facebook was selling huge lots of books by Barbara Cartland, Marion Chesney & Joan Smith. I was interested in getting all of them, but in the end bought just the Joan Smith lot for $30 which included most of the Regency novels she wrote from 1977 to 1998. Shown here are the lots.

Here are the final 3 pages of my article about romance novels that appeared in the Collectors' Club Newsletter #123 (Nov. 2018). At the time, I had actually read only one or two of the romance novels that I owned, so my focus was more on surface details like cover art and publication history.

I began buying romance novels in April 2018, and by October I had written an article about the genre that was printed in the comics fanzine Collectors' Club Newsletter #123 (Nov. 2018). The article ran 7 pages, so the first 4 pages are shown here and the remaining 3 pages will be in my next post.

Kinda amazing that this book will be available in stores on Tuesday (March 5, 2025) given the political climate of extreme hostility towards LGBTQ+ in the United States today.

Comic books that I bought today, all but one of them released this month.

Romantic Times #231 (May 2003) contained a survey form asking readers if they were reading as many romance novels as they were a decade ago. The results (and an accompanying article about the subject) were published in RT #234 (August 2003).

Just added a bit over 50 scanned pages to my Romantic Times Index site for the year 1999 (which is where I had stopped at previously, a few years ago). Here's a sample:
