We're all looking for The One. We all want to meet that one special person, fall in love, and live happily ever after, just like the movies. But what if it isn't?

I should have known this was going to suck, there's a quote on the back cover from actress Dakota Johnson.

Stunningly beautiful, not a jot of acting talent, and absolutely nothing to do with literature. No thanks.

Me still seeing tonnes of people praising Del Toro's Frankenstein:

"I DNF first-person books if I can't relate to the protagonist" is a kind of illiteracy.

The point of first person is not to insert yourself into a narrative. You are supposed to experience and empathize with the perspective of a character that is intended to be fully fleshed out.

Remember kids this is the median!

My four book deals have netted me, in total, £0.
A reminder that the median book deal for a debut author in the UK is £7000, paid over 12-18 months. (from 2022 Society of Authors report). Some of your favourite writers are struggling. societyofauthors.org/2022/12/06/a....

Reader, it was both.

I need a new clutch.

Happy fucking Christmas to me.
It's MOT day, which means I can't do anything as a wait in fear for a phone call that might ruin me financially. And also emotionally.

Been slogging through this one for the last week - currently on page 567 of around 920.

It's good, but it's a lot. The amount of characterisation is, frankly, overwhelming. It's a solid 3/5 book - if it were 4-500 pages it'd be truly brilliant.

I'll finish it, but stick to Tom Wolfe in future.

"I couldn't find the right words to express how amazing this book is."

We all want life to work out like our favourite 90s romcom, but what if life isn’t actually like the movies?

For the first time, I've been accused of using AI in my freelance writing.

And I'm furious.

To have done a close reading on two chapters of someone's work, made copious notes, then turned those notes into a report, only to have it belittled and disregarded, has really made me feel like crap.

A snapshot of life:

My wife, unpacking her bag after a trip to London, threatens me to leave her snacks alone.

The snacks?

A completely flat donut and half a mars bar.

"The novel Bret Easton Ellis would write if he were living in post-Brexit Britain"

BELONGING is a novel about being young and in love in a world that is cold and uncaring, while trying to work out who you are.
