Comes down to two things: Yutaka Izubuchi being the mech designer for 0080, and the Kampfer being an entirely original designs (most of the 0080 designs were updates of older gundams). His gundams do, usually, look more like gundams than labors, although he did give the Guncannon MP a labor head.

Stick to HG (High Grade) kits. Generally the least expensive gundam models, are designed to be to snap-fit, and are cast in color so you don't really need to paint them. Avoid MG, PG, or RG kits, they're more expensive and harder to build (though most are still snap-fit).
