Random Commodore 64 Screenshots
@rndc64screens.bsky.social
Posting random screenshots of Commodore 64 games, and writing a bit about each. Expect both classics and obscure or even bad games. Sometimes also other things.

Not a bot (AFAIK), and all screens were taken manually by myself. Corrections are welcome!

Given my lack of activity lately, I'm not one to talk. But I just want more C64 stuff on Bluesky! :)

The Classic Adventures Solution Archive lists well over 300 games created using Graphic Adventure Creator, including several that were released commercially by various publishers. So it was quite popular on the different 8-bit computers it was released on. 3/3

Graphic Adventure Creator was a text adventure/interactive fiction authoring system that required no programming, and featuring a built in graphics editor. The parser was pretty decent, and it was certainly possible to make reasonably good games with the system 2/3

Recently played this to get some more flight sims in the screenshot pool, and found myself quite impressed.

Still, it does work pretty much like the one-player mode in the arcade game, and while it looks and sounds pretty simple, it is decent fun. Fire One was released by Epyx, and it seems that it was only available in a compilation that also included another arcade conversion, Starfire. 3/3

The arcade game featured a split screen and support for two players, and if playing alone you'd be able to see the computer playing on his half of the screen. The Commodore 64 version is one player only, and does not have a split screen display. 2/3

This game is definitely a game worth playing, even today, though there are obviously areas where it feels a bit clunky. I’d probably recommend the Amiga version, or the PC version with the modern companion app. If you do try the Commodore 64 version, go for the unofficial cartridge release. 4/4

Pool of Radiance is an excellent game, with tons of depth but a pretty easy-to-learn user interface. The Commodore 64 version is very good, and feature-wise it seems to be on par with the PC/Amiga versions. The graphics are also quite well done. 3/4

You navigate the world in first person, with the game using the same kind of grid-based movement system most RPGs of that era used. When enemies are encountered, the game switches to a top-down perspective, and you control each of your heroes directly in turn-based tactical combat. 2/4

It did have a goal and time limit, though these games are highly replayable.

This version of Star Trek was created by Don Lekei. It was published by a budget publisher called Green Valley Publishing on a compilation titled Star Trek Evolution. But I suspect it had been released as public domain (or similar) before that happened. I found it on a TPUG disk. 4/4

It’s still a text-based game, though. You pilot the USS Enterprise around the galaxy, searching for and destroying Klingon ships before they can destroy the friendly bases scattered about. While the game seems complicated at first, it’s not hard to learn - and actually quite fun. 3/4
