I walk past this park every day. These were already removed before I arrived in 2022. The area had been closed in recent years to enable the construction of an underground car park beneath King’s College Circle, which is when the markers were taken down. But they were certainly here before COVID.

What goes wrong if you just assume k is an infinite field but not necessarily alg. closed? You can still pick closed points p and q, right?
