We have been looking around the royal yacht HMS Britannia in Edinburgh but my sons were completely distracted by what they thought were parts of a space-rocket being transported by cargo ship. I thought it was unlikely but didn’t have any brighter ideas - any suggestions?

If the ball is even wider, so wide that the batter would not be able to reach it without themselves leaving the pitch, then the umpires should signal no ball and immediately dead ball, meaning no further runs or wickets are possible.

A "wide" is a ball which is too far from the batter to be played with an ordinary cricket shot. However if the ball is so wide that it bounces off the pitch, it is a no-ball (which trumps a wide).

Wise words from Tumblr-user brightwanderer. As so often cricket has a lot to teach us. Most innings - including very successful ones - end by getting out. Even some of the very best: Gooch’s 333, Cook’s 294, Pietersen’s Oval 158 - the batter was eventually out. But no-one could say they “failed”.

My wife is doing some Sashiko (Japanese embroidery). Though the pattern looks regular, it actually subtly changes. After doing half, she found that she had to start retracing lines she had already sewn. If she planned carefully, could she avoid this, she wondered?

Answer in next skeet... 1/2
