We tested effects of warming & environmentally-relevant concentrations of microplastics (MP) on the growth & feeding of fish. We found that MP had weaker effects than thermal stress, but high MP concentration reduced feeding regardless of temperature: aslopubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...

We studied the distribution & abundance of microplastics (aMP) in the upper St. Lawrence River. Mean concentrations were among the highest recorded for any aquatic system. We identifed environmental variables that influenced MP distribution across the river bed:

Why microplastics should be routinely sampled by limnologists.

No environmental field survey that has searched for microplastics has yet failed to detect their presence. They are omnipresent in the water column, in the sediments, and in aquatic food webs.

In the Richelieu River, 25 years' exposure to zebra mussel fouling and food competition has produced a longterm erosion of native unionid mussels, despite the river's chemistry being suboptimal for zebra mussels.

A shout out to the invertebrates that contribute to river ecosystem function.

Polycentropid caddisfly larvae are cool suspension feeders/predators. In the St Lawrence & Ottawa rivers, we commonly find the classic trombone-shaped nets of the polycentropodid Neureclipsis. #WorldRiversDay

Meet the freshwater mussel Margaritifera margaritifera. It can live for up to 130 years. It uses salmonid fishes as hosts for its larval stage. It is endangered in Europe but stable in Atlantic North America. It belongs in a different family than most other N. American & European freshwater mussels.

How do introduced goldfish handle two common stressors in north temperate urban waters? Acclimation to high temperature & salinity will increase CTmax. High salinities have negative effects on thermal tolerance that are buffered at intermediate temperatures. redpath-staff.mcgill.ca/ricciardi/Cl...

Tench (Tinca tinca) have been spreading in the St Lawrence River since the early 2000s. The presence of invasive populations can be obscure in some habitats. A test of multiple fishing methods reveals gill nets to be the most effective gear for capturing tench. www.reabic.net/journals/mbi...

"[Quagga mussels] filter phytoplankton—the base of the aquatic food chain—directly from the water. That limits food availability for zooplankton, which are a critical food source for young whitefish."

2/ Chicatun et al (2024) compared functional responses (at 18C & 26C) of rusty crayfish from 6 invasive pop'ns across a latitudinal gradient. Attack rates of northern crayfish were higher than southern ones at both temp's, suggesting countergradient variation:
