In the last week´s Joint Webinar, Sandra Ougier (Marine Stewardship Council) from the sister project ECO-CATCH has provided a closer insight on how the MSC scheme works and the relevance of bycatch reduction as a key criteria within the global evaluation for a given fishery. #ETPBycatchReduction

The #REDUCERegionalOnboardObserversWorkshop "Training for Marine Megafauna Bycatch Data Collection and Mitigation" has finished today with sessions focused on Data collection and processing, Electronic Monitoring System and DNA sampling (turtles).

The "Joint Webinars on bycatch" (REDUCE, #MarineBeacon and #CIBBRiNA) have joint 3 new European projects working on the topic: #ECO-CATCH, #MarineGuardian and #LifePrometheus.
So, this Friday 14 November, Sandra Ougier (MSC) will explain how this program addresses bycatch issues of ETP species.

Presentations evolve around biology, ecology and species identification of these taxa. Attendees are also dealing with interactions with fisheries, mitigation techniques and best practices for safe handling & release of bycatch specimens (sea turtles, seabirds, sharks & rays and marine mammals).

We will be in Nouakchott (Mauritania) next week delivering a Workshop on “Marine Megafauna Bycatch Data Collection and Mitigation” aimed at regional onboard observers. The training will deal with, among other subjects, standardizing bycatch data collection protocols.

Finally, the #IVConferenceDecadeoftheOceans was closed by the President of Cabo Verde, Mr. José M. Neves, before the breathtaking natural scenery of Pico de Fogo. He also announced the next edition of the event will take place in the wonderful island of Boa Vista.
