Started playing Fantasy Life i yesterday and it is just as addictive as the first one on the 3DS. Already played the prologue of half of the lives and can't wait to play more.

Amazon was also kind enough to invite me to preorder it. It would be rude to not take up this invitation.

Name 4 games with a 10/10 soundtrack ~ JRPG edition

4 different composers made these amazing soundtracks: Miki Higashino, Nobuo Uematsu, Hiroki Kikuta and Yasunori Mitsuda. I can't get enough of their music! 😊

I gave the first Dragon's Dogma another try (after bouncing off after a few hours) and I'm enjoying it so much. I played through DD2 a year ago and both feel very similar. I can't believe I can play this on the train on my Switch. 😊
(also I tried to make my character look like me 😅)

8) Mega Man V
The color-modded version of this Game Boy Mega Man game is just a joy to play. It's the first of the GB games that has entirely new content and it's just a great game by itself.

As some of you were asking for a reference. The monsters will be based on smaller sprites (that are used in the overworld), which are yet to be made, but in the end it will look something like this. (The image is taken from Dragon Quest Monsters)

Another tool I created was a cutscene editor, which tool inspiration from something like RPG Maker, where I could create a sequence of events. The best thing about it was the little triangle at the end of each line, which meant that an event could either wait or run in parallel with other events.

Similar to the sprite-stacking itself, I was drawing onto a shadow surface for every layer of the stack. Depending on the distance and height and brightness of the light source, the shadow would get transformed a little with each layer, which gave it a convincing look in my opinion.

One feature I was very proud of was the lighting, which I hadn't seen in any other game that used sprite-stacking. As with the whole style, it was a lot of smoke and mirrors, but I thought it was convincing enough. And its performance was good, as it could be computed once.

Soon, I was starting to build complete rooms with different sets of furniture. Everything could be rotated and stacked, which already gave enough freedom to make something that felt lived-in.

To be honest, at that time I thought I had something great in the works. The story I had in mind seemed really interesting and the tech also held up, so I started working on the tools needed to make this game. First up was the level editor. It started really simple.

As the game would have a big focus on the story and character interactions, next I created a way for the player to talk to NPCs. I tried to make it as stylish as possible, with dynamic UI elements like the animated talk prompt and the camera and speech bubbles working together.

When all that was done, I created another test scene, this time a more complex police station that would sit in the center of the dome. After making the environment, I added a lot of NPCs and let them run around. I was very happy with how everything turned out.

I wanted to create a world that seemed to be alive, so I also worked on animated screens and billboards, which was harder than you might think, as I couldn't use sprite-stacking for it. I had to implement transformations where I would draw the animation by shifting its four corners.
