I don't remember the next few days but I was in the hospital for ages and I DO remember being weighed by a nurse and told that I weighed 36 pounds. I was eight years old.

So that is all of my Star Wars story, sort of.

Brandy, who had been dead for three months, walked into the living room and lay his gentle yellow head on the couch next to me, staring sadly at me with his soft grey eyes. He was, I knew, so so sorry this was happening to me. I was unconscious when my mom came back in.

So here is my Brandy ghost story, but it is a bummer, unlike the previous jolly tale: a few months later, I got really sick with some grim stomach bug and did not get better. I was laying on the couch drifting in and out while my parents warmed up the car to take me to the hospital. I was dying.

I have a ghost story about Brandy, but it's not Star Wars-adjacent.

It was on television the same night that my childhood dog Brandy died a hard, heroic death and so our household was in such a state of grieving that I was able to sneak in a viewing of the forbidden Star Wars and I was... under-impressed and also sad about Brandy, who was a beautiful boy.
