I teach my kids that it starts with understanding cognitive biases, logical fallacies, methods of persuasion. This one is especially important, methinks.
The backfire effect: when some aspect of your core beliefs is challenged, it can cause you to believe even more strongly. We can experience being wrong about some ideas as an attack upon our very selves, or our tribal identity. This can lead to motivated reasoning which causes a reinforcement of beliefs, despite disconfirming evidence. Recent research shows that the backfire effect certainly doesn't happen all the time. Most people will accept a correction relating to specific facts, however the backfire effect may reinforce a related or "parent" belief as people attempt to reconcile a new narrative in their understanding. I don't have zigzag for todays #WIPSnips but I do have jagged. A description of one of the city districts in 'First to Fall'. The Dip is like the ocean, something old and terrifying lurks at the very bottom. #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts
The Dip ran over the face of the city like a scar, huge and jagged. A chasm that was said to have been created in an earthquake when the Fifth Sister imprisoned the Sixth. It ran parallel to the river and no one knew how far down it reached. The poorest of Dragaul's citizens were crammed down there and many clerks were threatened if they misbehaved they'd be put on duty to the Dip. One enterprising Baron had created a competition where the Dip children competed against each other to create the most beautiful roof gardens. Generations of junior horticulturists were born, families feuded over flowers as each successful child was brought up to the Keep. And it kept the Dip looking vibrant and colourful for those who lived above it. With it being late spring, the tulips were out. This year an entire roof, ten times the size of these offices, had been covered so that it gave the effect of a standing yellow bear against a black background.

“Miss Jennifer?” someone asks from my right, and I spin my head around to see a very unexpected sight. A large caterpillar, coloured yellow and green in a dazzling zigzag pattern, stood in the hallway there. Half its body is upright and regarding me with an intense gaze from two large and dark compound eyes, while the other half stretches behind it. I can see that the other occupants in the hallway are avoiding going anywhere near this… person, or even looking at them. Must be someone important. “Yes?” I say in confirmation. “Good. I am Dame Voliannas, your legal council in this lawsuit against the Kowellian Entity. I will be handling your case today and for the rest of the trail,” the caterpillar, Voliannas, declares in a crisp, no-nonsense tone that reminds me of the second grade. If Miss Teller had been an insect, this is what she would have looked and sounded like. I resist the urge to shudder at the memory, and stand up to meet Voliannas eye to eye, and extend my hand.

No-one in or out without Her Majesty Calcifa’s say so.” “This is ridiculous!” He threw up his arms in despair and the opposing soldiers moved their pointy things closer, but not over the ‘border’. “I just … all I need … this is …”

“We take the fire stairs down the side of the building, when we reach the ground, head for the shopping mall across the street. Get inside, lose yourselves in the crowd. Whatever happens, do not stop, just run. If we get separated, we’ll meet in the coffee shop on the north side, then get a car from there. Understood?” They both nodded mutely. “Great.” I handed the gun back to Liz. “You might need this. Just…be careful where you aim it, alright? Now, let’s go. And hurry, before they figure out this is where we went.” We scrambled down the rusty ladder that led to the stairs, which zigzagged down the side of the building. The alley was quiet, and for a moment, I thought we might get away clean. But, when we were about one story from the ground, I saw a gunman round the corner underneath the stairs. I cursed under my breath. We were too exposed up here; it would be like shooting fish in a barrel. So, as he raised his weapon, I figured I only had one viable option. “Remember, don’t stop!” I shouted over my shoulder, then I vaulted the railing and dropped.

- Brother’s Keeper, book one of my fantasy WIP about two brothers bound by a misunderstood power.
Not far below, the trail he had ascended wound across and down and doubled back, across and down, repeating the pattern for thousands of spans. From where he sat near the innermost face of the curving range, he could not even see the tops of the trees growing on the slope beneath him. He loved the solitude and quiet, broken only by the wind soughing in the grass and the cries of the eagles, by whose outstretched wings the mountain dwellers made measure of vertical distance. Even more, he loved the view. About and beneath him, encompassed by the peaks, the land swept away and down like half a bowl in deepening shades of green, with the silver-green Forest puddled at the bottom. Straight ahead, the pale blue-gray shape of a far distant mountain blended into a softening sky near the horizon. Brother's Keeper A.C. Turek

“Anything else I could help you with?” he asked. “Ye-e-eah,” I said slowly. “There’s a word here, Lazarus. Really small, right below the center. See? Do you know what that means?” He raised an eyebrow. “Lazarus? I’m not sure. Could be a family name.” “I’ve never met anyone named Lazarus.” “Well, we could find out.” He gestured for me to follow him. “Here, come with me.” I followed him, zigzagging through aisle after aisle, toward a section of the Library I’d never seen before. At last, we came to a clearing amid the shelves, where sitting atop a sturdy wooden pedestal was a strange off-white boxy device with wires trailing out of it. “What’s that?” I asked. “A computer,” said Mr. Gellar. As I followed him around to the front of the device, I saw that its face was like a glossy black mirror. “Think of it as a sort of knowledge machine. It has the whole Library catalogue stored in its memory.” I was in awe. “Memory? So is it... alive?” He grinned. “No, no. Not any more alive than the books are. But we can use it to search through the collection for anything we want. Saves a lot of time.”

The center of Devon was an open space marked by a large stone fountain built. No water flowed from it, and like the gate doors, it was defaced with crude graffiti. Its base had become a bin filled with broken bottles and other assorted trash. Although an open area, it felt cramped. The skyline of the city loomed all around, and despite traditionally being squares, Devon’s center—Vega Plaza, according to Captain Vance—was more of a zigzag.

Faldor turned on them sharply, skating his gaze between the two of them, as if willing them to keep their thoughts to themselves, and then turned back to Darion. “So, who among these heathens are being processed this evening?” Andrea stepped boldly up to her king and then looked at the guard around his shoulder. “That is precisely what I wanted to know.”

“What exactly is the truth? Is it really something we can tell those idiots wreaking havoc outside?” said Sophie, watching as Scruffy zigzagged past a vampire engrossed in a debate with a dockworker. “We treat them like idiots, and rightfully so, since they behave like idiots. But shouting at an idiot won't make him any less of an idiot. And lying to an idiot just points him in a different direction. Have we considered why they believe Maestro’s nonsense in the first place? All they ever hear is shouting, Polo. From Florenti, from Maestro, from us, from every headline pouring panic into their heads. They don’t have a quiet place to listen and learn. They obviously haven’t earned one, I don’t deny that. But even idiots can learn, if you stop beating them with the truth, and start showing it to them instead. Show them that we’re not so different, all of us.” She gestured towards the bar, where differences of various shapes and sizes were busy getting equally drunk. “Maybe instead of locking them out, we leave the door open. Let them see for themselves.” She was wise for her age, Polo had to admit, as he met her earnest gaze. Completely wrong, of course, but wise all the same. In his experience, the truth didn’t change minds so much as harden whichever part of the skull it bounced off. And showing it to them would accomplish no more than showing a haddock a fresco. Sophie was right about the way things ought to be, but people, at their very core, simply didn't work like that. If they did, half the city wouldn't be outside proving her wrong.

Can’t recommend these books enough! Tiffany Aching's among the best FMCs ever written, imo.

One of the most badass lines I've EVER read is from Book 1. No grand monologue or epic battle needed. Just a 9-year-old girl talking to a toad, deciding to stand against the darkness, because 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘦𝘭𝘴𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭?
Book quote: You'd better tell me what you know, toad," said Tiffany. "Miss Tick isn't here. I am." "Another world is colliding with this one," said the toad. "There. Happy now? That's what Miss Tick thinks. But it's happening faster than she expected. All the monsters are coming back." "Why?" "There's no one to stop them." There was silence for a moment. “What’s happening?” someone called. Beneath the sounds of distant screaming, a new sound began to take shape: an angry chant, though the words were indistinguishable. Then, down a nearby lane, there was a blinding flash of light. Without a sound, but with a vibration that shook the earth even where they stood, one of the stacked slave-dwellings lost an enormous chunk of itself, as if some invisible giant had taken a bite out of it. “Crystal bomb!” a man shouted. The crowd erupted into panicked shrieks. The sea of people now became a chaotic stampede, as everyone rushed to escape. Kena still hadn’t managed to fully grasp what was happening. But he saw Mireia run forward, against the flow of the crowd. He took off after her, heart racing.

My grandfather cut more turf in a day Than any other man on Toner’s bog. Once I carried him milk in a bottle Corked sloppily with paper. He straightened up To drink it, then fell to right away Nicking and slicing neatly, heaving sods Over his shoulder, going down and down For the good turf. Digging. The cold smell of potato mould, the squelch and slap Of soggy peat, the curt cuts of an edge Through living roots awaken in my head. But I’ve no spade to follow men like them. Between my finger and my thumb The squat pen rests. I’ll dig with it.

The Louvre may have to wait
a while! 😅 Lessons learned:

- Shading is damn difficult with actual
colour pencils instead of an app

- Blend where there's even a hint of black = Everything turns brown 😖

- Use a light touch for outlines. If the tip breaks, relax & erase instead of
drawing uneven lines

Some of the comments, however, had been written by my mother. My heart did a little dance the first time I recognized her loose, looping cursive. I’d had no idea that I would find her own words here in these pages. It was almost like being able to hear her voice again after all these years. Her comments were different from the ones left by the Librarians. She was always trying to draw the story back to our world—looking for a meaning beyond simple definitions. “The people are unable to see their true reality. Is it the same for us?” She had tried to tell me years ago. We were all wearing green spectacles. We were all looking through lenses that limited our view, blocked out all other colors, all other possibilities. There could be different ways. There could be other worlds. Had my mother finally made it to her own Oz? Why hadn’t she taken me with her?
