This is my biggest issue. If I used it for something I don’t understand, it looked good. When I used it for something I know, it wasn’t. As it becomes prominent, people are out there spreading stuff that’s 75% true, looks good enough, and is wrong in important ways

That is mostly right. The 90s started with Doolittle. (I think 1989 had several good 90s albums, right? Pretty Hate Machine and Stone Roses for sure.) But yes Smells Like Teen Spirit slammed the door on the 80s.
