We will be able to rebuild a constitutional order when Trump is deposed. But it will require rooting out the influence of billionaires, reinvigorating democratic decision making, and complete reform of the corrupted courts. We can do this.

"Western civilization," the font, the 11 stars - 11 states in the confederacy, for the record.

Why is this never news? Why are we letting our government agencies do this sort of thing while the news agencies report on hallucinated trade deals and act like everything is normal

NEW: The F.D.A. announced in an internal memo that 10 children died "because of" the Covid shot. Other experts want to see proof.

“This is a profound revelation,” Dr. Prasad's memo said. “For the first time, the U.S. F.D.A. will acknowledge that Covid-19 vaccines have killed American children.”

I didn’t want to overreact, and took time to read this. Having done so, I’m adding Northwestern to the list of places I won’t visit or speak. The concessions re: international students and gender-affirming care are not merely symbolic.
Here’s the text of the Northwestern settlement with the DoJ, which includes a $75 million financial component / payoff (cc @profmarkovic.bsky.social):

The reason we are in this mess is a complete lack of accountability.

“No accountability, again” is not a winning message, even if it makes Tom Nichols feel like Serious Thinker on these matters.
Pipe dreams don't change things. I've said point-blank that I think what happened in the boat strikes is a war crime, but I don't think "let's hand over US officers to foreign courts" is a winning Dem message, even if it makes people on Bluesky feel brave and virtuous and good about themselves.
Part of the reason to speak out, even if it’s a pipe dream, is that Americans generally aren’t keen on letting a pundit class euphemize international accountability for war crimes as some kind of nebulous international control of U.S. military personnel generally.

A note on SaneWashing: I read part of this post to family (all liberal Democrats who consume a lot of news, but not social media), and it blew their mind. They all thought it was parody: if Corporate Media did not SaneWash, it would shock US, his approval would plummet from low (30s) to lower(20s).

This was always the most absurd implication of the immunity decision: the pardon power is enumerated in the constitution, and therefore in the most protected "bucket" of executive orders.

SCOTUS has to write themselves out of this absurd conclusion, or we have no choice but to remove those judges.
i think that we should charge even people who have been pardoned, because there is no conceivable way the founders intended the pardon power to permit the executive to order people to commit crimes and then pardon them for them

I have actually done some reimagining of the Bush 2 thing, and part of the calculus was the embarrassed press not admitting to itself it went all-in on the Iraq War along with the admin. So everybody hated both the press and the president.

Entering a similar realm now, maybe worse for both.

This is the second largest payout from a private university to the Trump admin yet, second only to Columbia’s $200m

Biden and Garland’s biggest mistake was failing to hold those responsible for all the crimes and corruption we saw from 2015 to 2021 accountable.

The next Democratic President can’t repeat this. We need a special counsel appointed on day 1 — and tribunals setup to judge war criminals.

Biden thought he could “heal the soul of the nation” and bring us all together. As optimistic as that idea was, it was wrong.

We won’t move forward by unifying. We’ll move forward by trying the corrupt fascists and showing the law *will* be enforced.

Every single congressional Democrat needs to be out there, right now, insisting that Pete Hegseth resign right now and announcing that he will be held accountable for committing war crimes.

If you do not demand accountability here and now, they will only become more emboldened.
Exclusive: Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth gave an order to “kill everybody” in the first strike on suspected drug boats in the Caribbean. After two men survived, the mission commander ordered a second strike to comply with Hegseth’s instructions, according to two sources.

Every headline about the Hegseth thing should read “ordered the killing of men, a war crime” because it unambiguously is. This isn’t a matter of debate. You can’t sink a ship and then blow up the helpless survivors, even if they’re actual enemy soldiers, much less random South American men.

This is my yearly reminder that

A) The Pilgrims never turned on the Wampanoags. The Puritans who did were a whole different group of people.

B) Thanksgiving became a holiday to celebrate whooping the Confederates.

Sometimes we can just enjoy traditions without guilt!
Thanksgiving is problematic. Giving thanks is not. As someone who wants to remember the attempted genocide of indigenous people but also likes a reminder to practice gratitude, I like to use Indigenous People's Month to support (and be grateful for) indigenous creators. A partial list! /1

Can’t wait for that empty apology from the NFL later this week that they got the false start call wrong.
