it's a nice day to ride a bike

weird bike part of the week is the Mavic ZAP, the first production electronic rear derailleur. it predates Shimano's Di2 by 16 years, and used really high end tech and materials for the time. unfortunately it was extremely expensive, and most people were more interested in mountain bikes in the 90s

I don't have anywhere to actually hook it up right now, so I put out my old wii and a wiimote as a display piece on top of the kallax

I put this Isabelle amiibo on my PC case as a reminder to try to provide good service to customers, even when they are being difficult

I've been killing time before work by reading about the game boy, and found an accessory I didn't know about before: the pocket sonar, which as you would imagine can be plugged into a game boy and by placing the sensor into water can help one to find real life fish. fun stuff!

weird bike part of the day is Shimano Biopace cranksets and chainrings. it was Shimano's take on the "elliptical" chainring, which is meant to even out the power on the dead parts of the pedal stroke. while some riders liked it, it never really caught on and was dropped in the 90s.

pickup trucks for the average person should not have been allowed to advance past this. if you need anything bigger, you should have to provide some kind of documentation showing you have the license and need for special heavy machinery, otherwise you get the 1990 toyota hilux

good lord, I was watching the @digitalfoundry.bsky.social video about the steam machine and look at the size of the heatsink on this thing!

I got off work early today and the weather was nice plus the vibes were good, so I went for a nice little pedal. I think we're gonna make it

it's not just ray ban: I was made aware of this product today, apparently oakley also has meta AI glasses. looks like the assholes are surging not only into popular culture, but also the outdoor industry

I clicked on it out of curiosity and the page it brought me to was even more concerning

can anyone explain to me what is going on in this temu ad? like does this make sense to anyone else, or am I losing my mind

the dog keeps trying to eat cat litter/poop so I 3D printed this thing to try to keep the door ajar without letting it fully open. it's someone else's design, but I'll probably make some modifications to it after seeing how this first version performs (she's a big dog)

look at this thing, man. I like sandwiches and I like pickles but this is just distorted and profane

honorable mention goes to the Surly Dingle Cog, which allowed you to manually adjust the wheel in the dropouts using available chain slack to swap gearing. not a bad idea for having a bailout gear, plus it's way more efficient than an IGH. I run two cogs on a freehub on my own single speed, actually

weird bike part of the day is the Sturmey Archer S3X 3-speed fixed gear hub. it's actually a modernized version of an earlier model they offered, and it's every bit the freak still. it's a fun concept, but adding any kind of complexity to a fixed gear drivetrain is just antithetical to the idea imo

I'm looking around for one of those folding sun visors that you put in the windshield to keep the inside of the car a bit cooler, and stumbled on this image explaining why you should use this company's shade:
