Oh wow! I’ve never seen one of those. I guess it’s a kind of tool, even though it’s called a machine? There’s a similar distinction between, say, a table saw (considered to be machinery) and a hand held saw (considered a tool).

Do you mean a portable sewing machine? I think there’s a difference between portable and hand-held. A sewing machine needs to be on a table top, you wouldn’t use it by holding it in your hands.

Yes! We’re about to paint our flat and I’ve had exactly the same thought. Everything is “heritage”. The only exception I can find is Dulux trade paints.
