I remember the 'fill in a form' unit standard and literally all they had to do was write block capitals with one letter per box and some still managed to screw it up

A lot of people Do Not Understand, so it's probably a reasonable survival mechanism until you know the other person a bit (in my experience of weirding people out)

In a world where facts are immediately available do we want people who can only parrot a bunch of names and dates, or do we want people who can make meaning, synthesise, evaluate?

The Social Studies curriculum was conceptual not only because it let teachers select contexts that were relevant to their students, but also because getting kids to understand concepts is hard! They have to think hard!
