Lapsed organic chemist. Core instrumentation lab director. I love science, technology, and ingenious solutions to problems great and small.
Long time no post and this is very off topic, but I have to give respect to the people assembling these G502X mice for Logitech. Most mice have electronics on the shell. Here we’ve got everything on a central frame and the buttons weave through that frame. Some of my instruments are simpler.

This new piece showcases 100 natural products. Many of the syntheses of these compounds have had significant impacts in organic synthesis.
There are many different structural and functional motifs that have required amazing innovations in synthesis. And one of mine is in there too! #chemsky #sciart

Great news.

I remember when the family with a mutation in a sodium channel was discovered.

This follows my general rule: it often takes 25 years to go from new mechanistic discovery to first approved medicine.

Drug development is HARD

On Thursday, the US Food and Drug Administration approved suzetrigine for short-term pain management, making it the first non-opioid pain drug given a regulatory nod in more than 20 years.

The FDA’s nod for suzetrigine bolsters confidence in the pharmaceutical industry’s strategy to target sodium channels.

Saddened to learn today of Martin Karplus’ passing over the weekend. He was an absolute luminary and founding force in computational chemistry and biophysics. His influence will be felt for many generations of scientists. May he rest in peace.

TIL there are automated melting point apparatus. And here I thought I was fancy because ours had a built in oil bath and a vintage mercury thermometer.
Has anyone in #chemsky had luck with buying an automated melting point apparatus? I keep thinking about getting one, and then back off at the price tag. If you have recommendations, or hate them, let me know!

I wanna do a natural products piece of art. What are your favorite natural products or total syntheses?

I love the sesquiterpines from Maimone, pleuromutilin from Reisman, ryanodol from Inoue, axinellamines from Baran, and ET-743 from Fukuyama #ChemSky

Beats egg nog every time.
Day 7 of #ChemAdvent24 🍷

Mulled wine contains several spices, including cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon. Cinnamon contains cinnamaldehyde, which is antimicrobial, the eugenol in cloves is mildly anaesthetic, and nutmeg contains myristicin, which is hallucinogenic in very high doses. Quite the cocktail!

Not being a lawyer, I never thought I'd have to correct an error in one of my favorite podcasts, @strictscrutiny.bsky.social , but oh well!
S6E10 "Gender-affirming care in the court" had an error that stopped me on my dog walk and there's a great American story in the correction.

There really needs to be a conversation about right to repair for scientific instruments.

Configuration parameters hidden behind service codes.

Manufacturers refusing to sell components because they are “service only”

This all raises the cost of research.

Acquity Classic SM repair. Intermittent split peaks, inconsistent injection volumes, and failure to reproducibly calibrate sample loop volume traced back to a faulty vacuum pump. The pump is behind the Peltier chiller module, but mounting screws were under the power supply 🤷 #chemsky
