My grandmothers fiancée was killed in action with the Liverpool Scottish at Bellewaerde in June 1915. Pre William Black is remembered on the Birkenhead cenotaph and the Menin Gate

Here’s an example of the Great War bronze memorial plaque, each one specially cast (not engraved) for the man or woman it commemorates. A huge undertaking to mark a nation’s loss

I’ve discussed it with my students; they felt it was an incredibly dynamic piece encompassing the drive to the colours in 1914. To them it summoned up the scale of impending sacrifice, much as you suggest.
