A quote in Edsall's piece today pretty much sums it up. But this is the issue - it quickly creates a new equilibrium, but it's not sustainalbe if various services and standards are negatively impacted. The big question will be how long and how much Americans will stand for a decline in standards.

Not hard to see that the neo-Nazi, far-right AfD party appeals to people in what was East Germany. This is the part of Germany that never had to grapple with the legacies of the Third Reich. Its population was told that the liberal, capitalist West was the source of Nazism.
